In their project Expanded Turn, sound artists Nour Sokhon (Beirut, Lebanon) and Jilliene Sellner (Hastings, UK) explore the universality of sonic realities unfolding during the Corona Pandemic. They juxtapose the experiences of geographically distant people and places through different research methods. By collecting interviews, sonic and visual experiences, Sokhon and Sellner bring to life cultural assumptions, prejudices, understandings and commonalities.

»In keeping with the upheaval of the last 18 months, at the moment it is likely that the exhibition will take place in our absence. We are sending you sonic messages that open emotional borders towards listening, sharing and care emerging from the experiences of 2020.

If you are in Düsseldorf, visit the sonic exhibition Expanded Turn at NKR. You can move through the space and experience a scoundscape of interviews, field recordings and reflections. In response to the ongoing work you are invited to share your own thoughts and feelings via a tape recorder that is installed in the exhibition space. The material will be added to Expanded Turns archive and will transform into different artistic translations in the coming months.

This is an invitation for you to send us your personal experiences during this uncertain time. You can participate online at any time. Record a voice message describing what you see, hear, smell, feel. Share your recordings of the soundscape that surrounds you. Send us photos of the view from your home or your home from outside. We are looking for contributions from people of all ages and genders from Beirut, and Hastings.

Send us photos, recordings and voice messages to: expandedturn@gmail.com«

Expanded Turn Workshop

On September 10 from 5pm to 8pm, we have invited artist and filmmaker Lena Ditte Nissen to interpret the work with a tour and a workshop. You can share your own thoughts and feelings via taperecoders or on paper. A registration is not required.

»In this workshop, we will first visit the exhibition by Nour Soukon and Jiliene Sellner, follow the sound works into the public space and create sound collages from voices and field recordings together. Listening becomes a performative act here, as we then reflect on the past one and a half years ourselves and record these reflections in different forms and languages. The results of the workshop will be incorporated into the exhibition and the artists' archive, and thus become an integral part of their ongoing project.«
