Concert by Simon Rummel Ensemble and Tina Tonagel

The sound installation, which can currently be viewed and heard at NKR Düsseldorf by artist Tina Tonagel, is comprised of 240 freely swinging slate slabs which are played automatically by being struck individually using small mallets. From the view point of organology, the structure can be described using either the term stone-play, or its Greek term lithophone. Slate is a natural material and although the stone plates all are the same shape, each still has its own sound. Some differ distinctly, though many sound similar and can only be distinguished by listening very closely.

The composer Simon Rummel has taken the time to listen closely and has analysed the individual slate slabs as they resound in Tina Tonagels composed sequence. By carefully adding tones, Rummel has created a new composition on the basis of his transcription and while it remains very close to Tina Tonagels work, it still leaves room for the unexpected by weaving space for improvisations into the sound web.

Simon Rummel and ensemble will play live to Tina Tonagels large lithophone at the finissage of the exhibition at the NKR.
